Spotlight: Nemo Bookkeeping
How did you get started in your business?
The main reason was for some flexibility to be able to spend one week day with my young daughter. I work late nights and weekends to accommodate that too and it is worth every minute.
I also wanted to build my own business and use the skills that I have acquired throughout my career as a qualified accountant and having spent a number of years at HMRC so having a bookkeeping business was an easy choice.
What do you enjoy most about what you do?
Seeing a client who is generally distressed that they are not on top of their bookkeeping and then the relief and pleasure they have when we have finished helping them is a fantastic feeling!
I also get a lot of pleasure from turning a set of disorganised books into financial reports on accountancy software that can be used by management as a tool for growth and efficiency saving.
What differentiates you from the competition?
Being a qualified accountant with HMRC experience gives me a knowledge base that puts my clients in no doubt that I have the skills to undertake the practical work. I am a very relaxed and confident person and I can put the clients at ease far better than most in my field. I have worked with many businesses, large and small and across many industries, so my level of experience is second to none.
What advice would you give to someone starting out?
Talk to as many business owners as you can. You will always learn something from them no matter how big or small their business is. Don’t ever think you know ‘enough’ and strive to find better ways of doing everything that you do.
Be prepared to work hard but always be mindful of the work/life balance. Always know what you are trying to achieve, set yourself goals and review your progress regularly.
What are current trends and changes in your industry?
From April 2019 Making Tax Digital comes into effect. This means that businesses above the VAT threshold of £85,000 are required to file their VAT returns electronically using accountancy software, ending the days of manually submitting VAT returns. This will mean that lots of businesses that previously didn’t operate a software package such as Sage will have to do so and possibly require a Bookkeeper to assist them.
What is the most effective way to promote your business?
Providing an excellent service is always the best way. This means never missing deadlines and providing accurate bookkeeping. This generates word of mouth testimonials and reinforces the fact that I take my clients’ day to day finance affairs as seriously as I do my own.
What change do you most want to see in your profession?
I feel that there should be more regulation for bookkeeping providers as presently there isn’t any regular review of bookkeeping services being provided to the general public. Accountants need a practising certificate to act for their clients and I feel a similar approach should be taken in the bookkeeping industry.
What big things are on the horizon for your business?
We have two new clients starting with us in the new year, along with a review of the services I presently provide to existing clients which will generate more work for us. I am excited that the two staff members who joined Nemo in the last few months will be fully embedded and ready to take on more exciting challenges with their Nemo clients. Our second year should also net us some more big clients as we become better known as a bookkeeping provider.
What type of customers are you looking for?
Our ideal client is one who requires our full range of services (Bookkeeping, VAT return preparation and Payroll provision) for one day a week based from Nemo Head Office. That said, anyone who needs a bookkeeper to assist them and make their life less stressful will always be welcome to reach out to us no matter how big or small they are. We offer a free initial consultation where we can assess how much time we would need to help you and be able to offer you a competitive price for our services.
